Bufete Díaz De Aguilar - HistorY

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DIAZ DE AGUILAR LAW OFFICE THROUGH ITS MAIN FIGURES

On 7th November 1841, Ignacio Díaz y Suárez swore before the Administrative and Disciplinary Division of the Lawyers’ Association of Gran Canaria “to be loyal to Queen Elizabeth II, to abide by the Constitution of the Spanish Monarchy and to comply well and faithfully with the by-laws of this Association.” Thus was born a firm that has been working uninterruptedly to this date.

Ignacio Díaz y Suárez was mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Dean of the Lawyers’ Association and Land Registrar. His humanitarian work during the cholera epidemic that hit the island in the middle of the 19th century gained him the acknowledgment of Queen Elizabeth II of Spain.

His son, Ignacio Díaz y Lorenzo, Bachelor in Law and Bachelor of Arts, continued the professional activity of the firm between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. A recognised jurist, he was Dean of the Lawyers’ Association and mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Ignacio Díaz de Aguilar, son of Ignacio Díaz y Lorenzo, was Captain of the Canary Islands Militias, Gentleman-in-Waiting of H.M. King Alphonse XIII, county council member, General Inspector of Railways and member of the National Railway Committee. A Bachelor of Law, he practised as a lawyer in Madrid and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

José Joaquín Díaz de Aguilar y Elízaga, graduate in Law by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, commenced his professional activity at his father’s firm at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the fifties. In 1988, he was elected Magistrate of the Civil and Criminal Division of the Canary Islands High Court of Justice by the General Council of the Judiciary upon the proposal of the Regional Parliament of the Canary Islands. He stood out because of his vocation for politics, was a member of the Private Council of H.R.H. Juan de Borbón and, later, chairman of the Canary Islands Democratic Junta after taking part in the creation of the Spanish Democratic Junta in Paris.

The firm is presently managed by four partners: Ignacio Díaz de Aguilar Cantero, Miguel Losada Terrón, David Sánchez Lanuza and José Fernández de la Cigoña.
